I received Appleseed last Wednesday, but didn’t get a chance to watch it until Sunday. Appleseed is a remake of the 1988 movie of the same title. Appleseed is based in the same world, with the same characters, but with a new story. In this version of Appleseed Deunan has been fighting the war outside of Olympus, not knowing that the war had been over for sometime. She is just about to be killed when she is saved by ESWAT and taken to Olympus. This is where she meets up with Briareos, her former comrade who she thought was dead. He almost was, but he was rebuilt by the Elders of Olympus. In this story Deunan, Briareos, and ESWAT are primarily fighting against the regular military, which are controlled by normal humans instead of bioroids. The General of the regular military hates bioroids and believes they will try to control mankind. That’s as far as I’m going to get into the story just in case someone wants to see it. For those that don’t care you can check this out.
In comparison to the 1988 release the animation was much better of course. The action sequences were more frequent and packed with much more action. The landmates were a lot cooler but you didn’t see them as much in this movie. I enjoyed the soundtrack. Music from artist such as Crystal Method and Basement Jaxx. Even though some music felt out of place, I still enjoyed it.
I do have to say I do have some problems with the movie. One was the way Deunans character was developed. She is supposed to be this super solider. A complete hard case. However, during the middle of the movie for about 15 minutes she becomes this completely soft girly girl. Whining and crying over stuff. I also think they could have placed a better voice with her character. It felt to soft for someone who had been hardened by war. Another thing is the mushy tone the movie took in the middle. It went from guns a blazin to cry me a river really fast. Luckily it went back to guns a blazin for a good amount of time before the end.
Overall, I give the movie a 3.5 out of 5. It’s worth a watch if your into mecha style anime. I will be checking out Appleseed: Ex Machina over Netflix instant streaming sometime this week and post my thoughts on it.
