I’ll tell you right from the start of this one, my knowledge of Green Lantern is very limited. I did not follow the comics. I know about his power and the very basics of his story, that’s about it. I only say that because when movies like this come along you typically find that a lot of fans don’t like the movie. As a non-fan of the Green Lantern I would like to say that I like the movie. It wasn’t mind blowing, but I found it pretty entertaining. DC Comic stories are usually good, so there is no surprise there. What did surprise me is the animation. Out of all of the DC animated films that I have seen, this is the best looking one in my opinion. The overall drawing was good, but the way they displayed fast motion and other action like explosions looked great. The action sequences pulled you in an didn’t look like some Saturday morning action cartoon.
You can really see many of the American animators taking note of Japanese anime. While the style still has an American feel to it, you can really see they took a few pages out of the anime book when it came to displaying action and fighting. Utilizing camera angles to make the fights and flight seem faster and more intense. I also liked the fact that it wasn’t kid-ish. No stupid jokes, no silliness. There was some adult language, but not enough where it would be rated R. The overall tone of the movie is what I would expect (remembering I have little knowledge of Green Lantern) a Green Lantern movie to be.
The special features on these DC films are always nice. They give a lot of back story on the characters. It’s the same with this one. They also give a lot of information on how the character came to be created. You get to hear from the animators of the movie, guys who drew the comic, and people who wrote the story. The special features are definitely worth a watch. The voice acting was top notch. The voices fit the characters, and it didn’t sound like they were trying too hard.
Overall I would give this animated film a 3 out of 5. If your into animated films or DC comics I don’t think you will be disappointed. I’m really looking forward to Superman and Batman: Public Enemies, I should have it in a few weeks. You’ll probably hear from me on that one too.
